After fiddling around with it a bit, I figured out that the answer was GOODY SHOES SHOES, where the phrase “goody two shoes” is written out by doubling the SHOES. However, that was quickly disproved when I got to 61A. My first assumption was that the puzzle had a rebus element because 1) I had trouble making entries fit and 2) it’s Thursday, which is when the majority of rebuses run. I had no trouble solving this one, although it did take me a while to understand the structure of the theme entries. I couldn’t help hearing that chant in my head as I worked on Mr. An abbreviation for “Around figure?” would be EST for estimate, because an estimate is “around” a certain number. Unfortunately, I couldn’t come up with a three-letter word for that.
The question mark and the A in “Around figure?: Abbr.” indicated that there was wordplay involved (e.g., that it wasn’t just a “round figure”), so I thought of a measurement “around” the waist. I loved this clue, because it took me on a bit of a wild-goose chase. In hindsight, this may have been a mistake.Ħ3D. It was from Trader Joe’s and had a pretty bottle, which is how I make all of my alcohol-purchasing decisions. I have not had a pisco that I have enjoyed, but that’s probably because the one I drank was not finely aged. PISCO SOUR is a great entry, and it makes its debut in the New York Times Crossword. The phrase “Fly-by-night?” can refer to someone who is unreliable or untrustworthy, but in this puzzle, it refers to an animal that really does fly at night: The answer is OWL.ģ4D. LASER is an acronym for “Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.”ġ0D.
